The first industrial production of terry cloth was done in 1850 by an English manufacturer. The word ‘terry’ is derived from the French word ‘tire’ which means to ‘draw out’. A towel made of Terry cloth is a Terry Towel. Terry is a woven fabric with loops that is famous for absorbing large amounts of water. The quality of the loops and their length determine the absorbency of the towel. Terry is usually manufactured or knitted from natural materials like cotton. It can be 100% cotton or may contain polyester.
It is mainly used for bath towels, bathrobes, cleaning cloths, kitchen towels, and face cloths. Below are some of the reasons we find Terry indispensable.
Bath – After a bath, it feels amazing to wrap yourself up with something soft. Apart from softness, Terry towels have excellent absorbency. Terry towels are primarily made of cotton because cotton has an incredible strength to absorb water. The Terry fibers are soft, causing no skin irritation or allergy, making them a safe product.
Kitchen – Apart from bath use, Terry towels are also recommended for kitchen use. They tend to have greater volume, which means you can target cleaning larger surface areas with ease. Grease, oil, paints and other spilled liquids can be easily wiped and the whole kitchen can be cleaned very quickly. Frequent cleaning and wiping of the cloth also indicates that the cloth needs to be strong and durable. Nothing makes a kitchen job easier than Terry cloth.
Pets – Since Terry cloth is a super thirsty fabric, it is strongly recommended for use in drying the furry members of the house like dogs and cats. The dense weaves do not trap furs and are cost-effective.
Long Lasting – Terry towels are hemmed on both sides. The quality stitched edges makes them washing machine friendly and easier to wash.
Colour Retention – The color or vibrancy of the cotton is retained indicating that the cloth you purchased will not fade and need not be replaced often.
Quick Drying – Terry towels are known for rapid drying. Moisture attracts a lot of air elements, like dust, germs, fungi, and bacteria, which in turn thrive due to increased moisture. Clothes that dry up quickly have no space for bacteria build up and are safer to use. Terry towels can keep bacteria causing diseases, skin allergies and infections at bay.
